A pastor who goes to the church-meeting in the spirit of his Master, feeling sure that in reliance upon the Holy Spirit he is quite able to answer any untoward spirit, sits at ease, keeps his temper, rises in esteem on each occasion, and secures a quiet church
but I question, gravely question whether a man who has grossly sinned should be very readily restored to the pulpit. As John Angell James remarks, "When a preacher of righteousness has stood in the way of sinners, he should never again open his lips in the great congregation until his repentance is as notorious as his sin."
Build in God's way. Expect not to see the happiness of the church by man-pleasing or flattery; this fabric will not stand if it be daubed with untempered mortar. Be faithful to the souls of men, though in so doing you displease them. Still aim at holiness; be always pressing forward toward perfection. So shall the counsel of peace at last be established.
Your home is to be a little church, a little seminary, in which you are to serve as an instructing prophet, teaching God's precious truth to your wife and children -addressing the mind, the conscience, the heart, and the will of each of your family members.

It reminds me of the behavior of a band of sheep under attack from dogs, cougars, bears, or even wolves. Often in blind fear or stupid unawareness they will stand rooted to the spot watching their companions being cut to shreds. The predator will pounce upon one then another of the flock raking and tearing them with tooth and claw. Meanwhile, the other sheep may act as if they did not even hear or recognize the carnage going on around them. It is as though they were totally oblivious to the peril of their own precarious position.
