It is easy to be religious when religion is in fashion; but it is an evidence of strong faith and resolution to swim against a stream to heaven, and to appear for God when no one else appears for Him.Matthew Henry's Commentary
Human learning is both ornamental and serviceable to a gospel minister, especially for the convincing of those who are outside; for it enables him to beat them at their own weapons, and to cut off Goliath's head with his own sword.
The essential ingredients of the fear of God are correct concepts of the character of God, a pervasive sense of the presence of God and a constant awareness of our obligation to God.
The true fear of God can cause a spiritual earthquake in a man's heart, able to overthrow all the Devil's strongest holds or bosom sins.God’s Striking to Correct or Revenge
Behold, and wonder, that the great God should love such a worthless world! That the holy God should love such a wicked world with a love of good will, when he could not look upon it with any complacency.
Take Jesus for your king, and by baptism swear allegiance to him; take him for your prophet, and hear him; take him for your priest, to make atonement for you.
A modest dress is a very good thing, if it be the genuine indication of a humble heart, and is to instruct; but it is a bad thing if it be the hypocritical disguise of a proud ambitious heart, and is to deceive. Let men be really as good as they seem to be, but not seem to be better than really they are.Matthew Henry's Commentary
Fear of God is a leading grace; it is the first seed God sows in the heart. When a Christian can say little of faith and perhaps nothing of assurance, yet he dares not deny but he fears God. God is so great that he is afraid of displeasing Him and so good that he is afraid of losing Him.
When the fear of God is strong in your heart, then the fear of man ceases. When the dictator ruled at Rome, then all other officers ceased; and when this fear of God rules, all other fears will be hushed.
To fear God is to have the awe of God abiding upon the heart, to be under a sense of the majesty and glory of the Lord shining forth in all His attributes, especially in His holiness and omniscience; the glory of His holiness, and the sense of such a holy eye upon the soul strikes it with dread and consternation. This is expressed in Scripture by sanctifying the Lord in the heart. "I will be sanctified in them that come nigh me" (Lev. 10:3). "Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread" (Isa. 8:13).Heaven Opened
Those that are of a fretful spirit will always find something to quarrel with. When we complain without cause, it is just with God to give us cause to complain.Gems, 28
