A wife takes sanctuary not only in her husband's house but in his heart. The tree of love should grow up in the family as the tree of life grew up in the garden. They that choose their love should love their choice. They that marry where they affect not will affect where they marry not. Two joined together without love are but two tied together to make one another miserable.
Grace not only makes a man more a man, but it also makes him more than a man. The primitive Christians were the best of men. None were more lowly in their dispositions or more lovely in their conversation. Noah was a just man and perfect in his generation. He was not a sinner among saints, but he was a saint among sinners. Who would have looked for so fair a bird in so foul a nest? Though he once acted as the sons of men do, yet he was numbered with the sons of God. A field of wheat may be good and yet have a weed in it. A saint is not free from sin—that is his burden; a saint is not free to sin—that is his blessing.
He is not a covetous man who lays up something providentially, but he is a covetous man who gives out nothing willingly. He is as prudent a man who sometimes distributes discreetly as he who accumulates hastily. Men frequently discover more wisdom in laying out than in laying up. Reader, the hope of living long on earth should not make you covetous, but the prospect of living long in heaven should make you bounteous. Though the sun of charity rise at home, yet it should always set abroad.
Where there is no confidence in God, there will be no continuance with God. When the wind of faith ceases to fill the sails, the ship of obedience ceases to plough the seas.
When you meet, speak one to another of the promises. The promises are the support of the faith, the springs of joy, the saints' royal charter. Are you citizens of heaven and yet do not speak of your charter? Speak of the preciousness of Christ: He is beauty and love; He has laid down His blood as the price of your redemption. Have you a friend who has redeemed you and never speak of Him? Speak one to another of sin, what a deadly evil it is, how it has infected your virgin nature and turned it into a lesser hell. Speak of the beauty of holiness, which is the soul's embroidery, filling it with such an oriental splendor as makes God and the angels fall in love with it. You that are the people of God, do you often associate together: "Those who feared the LORD spoke to one another" (Mal. 3:16). Christ's doves should flock together; one Christian will help to heat another. A single coal of juniper will soon die, but many coals put together will keep life in one another. Conference sometimes may do as much good as preaching. One Christian by good discourse drops holy oil upon another; that makes the lamp of his grace to shine the brighter.Godly Man’s Picture, 239
If men can find no comfort and yet set themselves to teach and encourage weaker Christians, by way of reflection they receive frequently great comfort themselves. So doth God reward this duty of mutual discourse; that those things we did not so fully understand before by discourse we come to know and relish far better. This should teach us to love and often engage in holy conference, for besides the good we do to others, we shall be profited ourselves. Divine Meditations
